NOCPIX ACE 2: what NETD below 12 mK means and why it is a different league

The number looks unremarkable, yet it is exactly what decides whether in fog, rain or at dawn you see a roebuck as a roebuck, or just a blurred blob. In this article we explain what NETD means, why it matters more than resolution, and what else the ACE 2 brings.

What NETD is and why it is the most important number in thermal imaging
NETD (Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference) is the smallest temperature difference the sensor can still distinguish from its own noise. It is given in millikelvin (mK). A sensor with NETD 12 mK tells apart two points that differ by 0.012 °C. A sensor with NETD 25 mK needs twice that difference to show them as two different shades at all.
Resolution (640 × 512 px) tells you how many points the sensor has. NETD tells you how fine a difference each point can see. On a clear frosty night game is 30 °C warmer than its surroundings and you will not notice the difference between 12 and 20 mK. The problem arrives exactly when you need it most:
- Fog and high humidity - water droplets absorb thermal radiation, and the contrast between game and background drops to a fraction.
- Rain - wet fur and wet vegetation have almost the same temperature.
- Dawn and dusk - soil, rocks and trunks warm up or cool down as fast as the game does.
- Wild boar in mud - the most common situation where an ordinary thermal shows only a dark outline without detail.
In these conditions a sensor with lower NETD shows antlers, legs, the eye and the direction of movement. A sensor with higher NETD shows a uniform blob from which neither species nor age can be judged. Better NETD therefore cannot be replaced by higher resolution or a bigger lens.

The difference between 15 and 12 mK looks small on paper, but in practice it is 20 % less noise. For image processing this means the algorithm does not have to smooth the image as aggressively, so fine structures are preserved - exactly the ones that let you tell a boar from a sow or a buck from a doe.

What else the ACE 2 brings over the first generation
Ocular Zoom 2.0 - hybrid optical zoom (2 - 4× or 3 - 6× depending on the model) without loss of resolution. Eye relief of 60 mm is 25 % longer than on the ACE, exit pupil 10 mm. The reticle stays accurate across the whole magnification range.
R+ 2.0 - the new version of the Reality+ AI algorithm, which removes ambient thermal noise and enhances real detail without artificial outlines.
LRF 2.0 and ballistics 2.0 - the integrated rangefinder up to 1,200 m measures 57 % faster. The ballistic calculator accounts for inclination, wind and environment and shows the corrected aiming point.
Intelligent Tracking - after a single distance measurement the device with its electronic compass stores the coordinates of the impact point. Tracking in dense cover is reduced to a minimum.
Dual Clarity - Motion mode for a smooth image on moving game, Still mode for maximum detail during identification.
Magnesium body and cold-rated battery - weight under 1 kg (25 % less than the ACE), recoil rating 7,000 J, runtime up to 8 hours. 5G Wi-Fi with transfers up to 20 MB/s and one-tap pairing with the app. The manufacturer guarantees security updates until the end of 2029.
