How to choose an observation thermal imager
Three parameters decide. Sensor resolution - 256 px is enough for shorter distances (models from 325 EUR), 384 px is the best selling middle ground and 640 px offers maximum detail even at long range. Sensor sensitivity (NETD) - the lower the value in mK, the better the image in fog and rain. Lens diameter - a smaller lens means a wider field of view in the forest, a larger lens means longer range over fields and meadows.
Monocular or binocular?
A thermal monocular is compact, light and fits in a pocket - the ideal first thermal device. A thermal binocular pays off during long observation: looking with both eyes does not tire the sight and most models combine thermal imaging with digital night vision and a laser rangefinder.
Do you need detail at long range? Choose a thermal spotting device with a lens of 35 mm or more - over fields and meadows it will reliably identify game even beyond a kilometre.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between thermal imaging and night vision?
Thermal imaging shows heat, so you will find game even in complete darkness, fog or tall grass. Night vision amplifies residual light and offers a more natural image with detail. For finding game, thermal imaging is the more versatile choice.
Does a thermal imager work during the day too?
Yes. Both thermal monoculars and binoculars work independently of ambient light, so you can use them for watching nature by day as well as by night.
How far can a thermal imager see?
Compact models with a 15 to 19 mm lens detect game at 700 to 900 m. A thermal spotting device with a 35 to 50 mm lens reaches 1 800 to 2 600 m. For ordinary observation the middle class is enough.
