How digital night vision works
Digital night vision captures residual light and infrared radiation through a sensitive CMOS sensor and shows the image on a display. Unlike classic analogue tubes, a digital device cannot be damaged by daylight, so most models work in both day and night mode. In complete darkness an infrared illuminator provides the "invisible light" - it lights up the scene without the animal or the observed object noticing.
850 nm or 940 nm illuminator?
When choosing, pay attention to the wavelength of the IR illuminator. 850 nm offers longer range and a brighter image, but the diode glows faintly red when viewed up close. 940 nm is completely invisible - ideal for discreet observation of shy game, though its range is slightly shorter. What to consider when choosing
Three parameters matter most: detection range (how many metres you can really see in the dark), sensor and display resolution (the 4K PARD models offer a noticeably sharper image) and battery life. Practical bonuses include a built-in laser rangefinder (LRF), video recording, Wi-Fi connection to your phone and rugged construction. A monocular is handy for one-handed observation, while binocular units are better for longer watching without eye strain.
Night vision vs. thermal imaging
Night vision shows a real image with detail - you can tell the species, the coat and the surroundings. Thermal imaging makes heat visible and finds an object even in fog or dense cover. Many observers therefore combine both: an observation thermal imager to find the animal and night vision to identify it.
