An eyepiece for your thermal clip-on: one device instead of two
Most hunters buy a thermal clip-on for the rifle and a night monocular for observation. Two devices, two batteries, two chargers. Yet most clip-ons have a small accessory that shops rarely mention: the eyepiece. Screw it onto the rear of the clip-on and the clip-on becomes an observation monocular – on the high seat, when stalking and when tracking after the shot.
What the eyepiece does
A clip-on has no eyepiece of its own because its image goes through your day scope. Take it off the scope and all you see is a display with no optics – small, unmagnified, unshielded. The eyepiece is a short tube with a lens and a rubber cup: the lens magnifies the display so you see it sharply by hand, the rubber blocks side light and hides the display glow from game. With the eyepiece you observe just like with a regular thermal monocular – including zoom, colour palettes, recording and, on LRF models, the rangefinder.

Why it pays off
- One device for two jobs. Clip-on on the rifle, monocular in hand. No need to buy and carry a second device.
- Quick change. Detach the clip-on from the adapter, screw on the eyepiece – seconds. The adapter stays on the scope, zero is unchanged.
- Same sensor, same range. Your monocular is at the level of the clip-on you bought – a 640 × 512 px clip-on is a 640 × 512 px monocular.
- Less charging. One set of batteries, one charger.

The eyepiece is tied to the clip-on series – the Thunder 2.0 eyepiece does not fit the Thunder 3.0 and vice versa. Always choose by model.
How to fit the eyepiece
- Detach the clip-on from the adapter on the scope (the adapter stays on the rifle).
- Screw the eyepiece onto the rear thread of the clip-on – no tools, all the way.
- Switch the clip-on on; the device switches to monocular mode (different data layout, digital zoom available) and you focus the image with the dioptre ring on the eyepiece.
- Before going back on the rifle, unscrew the eyepiece and click the clip-on back into the adapter. No re-zeroing needed.
Things to bear in mind
- A monocular made from a clip-on is somewhat longer and heavier than a dedicated monocular – for an all-night stalk you may prefer something lighter, but for the high seat and checking after the shot it is ideal.
- Choose the adapter by the outer diameter of your scope objective – see How to choose a thermal clip-on adapter.
- The eyepiece is not included with the clip-on; it is bought separately.
