How to choose a thermal imager for observation: the complete 2026 guide

Thermal imaging is no longer the preserve of the military or professionals. Prices for observation thermal imagers start under 700 €, so a quality device is within reach of any hunter, conservationist or wildlife watcher. The choice is vast, though - we alone list over 90 observation models - and picking the right one is not simple. In this guide we will show you what really matters when choosing.

Monocular or binocular?

A thermal monocular is the most popular choice. It is small, light, fits in a jacket pocket and is perfectly adequate for occasional and regular observation alike. If you are buying your first thermal imager, go for a monocular - for example the Pixfra Mile 2 M413M (689 €) or the popular HIKMICRO LYNX LQ35 3.0 (1 680 €).

A thermal binocular will be appreciated by anyone observing for long hours at a stretch. Viewing with both eyes is considerably more comfortable, does not tire the eyes, and most binoculars combine thermal imaging with digital night vision and a rangefinder. Sensor resolution: 256, 384 or 640 pixels?

The heart of every thermal imager is its infrared sensor. Its resolution decides how much detail you will see:

256 px sensor - entry class. Adequate for detecting game out to a few hundred metres, but you will hit its limits when identifying at longer range. The advantage is price - observation thermal imagers with this sensor start at 325 € with us.

384 px sensor - the golden middle and the best-selling category. An excellent balance of detail, reach and price, typically between 700 and 1 700 €.

640 px sensor - the premium class for demanding users. A wide field of view, a sharp image even under digital zoom and reliable identification of game at long range. An example is the PARD Leopard 640 eX (1 990 €) or the professional HABROK PRO HX60LS binocular.

Besides resolution, watch sensor sensitivity (NETD) as well - the lower the figure in mK, the better the device resolves small temperature differences, which you will value above all in rain and fog.

Objective: a small number up close, a large one at distance

Objective diameter (19, 25, 35, 50 mm...) affects both reach and field of view. A simple rule applies: smaller objective = wider field of view, ideal for woodland and shorter distances; larger objective = greater reach, ideal for fields and meadows. The all-round choice is an objective around 35 mm.

  1. Laser rangefinder (LRF) - you know instantly how far away the observed object is. At night the human eye misjudges distance by hundreds of metres.
  2. Photo and video recording - you can save and share what you observed. Standard on most models today.
  3. Wi-Fi link to your phone - the thermal image live on your phone through the app.
  4. Battery life and swappable cells - decisive on an all-night watch. Look for models with at least 6-8 hours of runtime or with removable batteries.

Frequently asked questions

Does thermal see through brush and grass?
Thermal imaging shows heat, so an animal will „shine through" thin vegetation where you would not see it with the naked eye. Thermal radiation does not pass through dense cover, glass or walls, however.

Does thermal work in daylight too?
Yes - unlike night vision, thermal imaging works 24 hours a day, in rain, fog and total darkness.

What is the difference between thermal and night vision?
Night vision amplifies residual light or infrared illumination and shows a real image of the scene. Thermal imaging shows temperature differences - it finds game faster, but the image carries less detail. Many observers therefore combine both; take a look at our night vision range as well.
